Lady Bug Release

This week we hosted a lady bug release with several homeschool friends at a local park. This is our second year doing this and something the kids really enjoy! Holly made a comment that usually she is out looking for various critters to catch and observe, but this time she is setting them free. True!!!

We got a couple containers of lady bugs to release. The kids all shared the knowledge they had on these little beetles, we discussed a nice way to release them and then the kids got to work. We spread them at a local park (with permission). After releasing the ladybugs we spent a beautiful afternoon enjoying the park with our friends. A walk around the pond, a splash in the creek and then a lot of time playing. The day was wonderful!!!

Rock Painting

Earlier this week we met up with some other homeschooling families at a local beach across town. The weather was perfect! The children all enjoyed a long time exploring the beach for treasures, critters and special rocks. Then we gathered up for a painting party. They all had a great time creating special rocks in a rainbow of colors. A creative way to enjoy art for the day. After a nice time of painting rocks, lunch was enjoyed and then back to the beach for more play. It was a really nice day and the kids had a great time!

Lady Bug Release

Today we met up with a group of home schoolers to release lady bugs at the park. Holly has done this a couple of times in the past and really enjoys this activity so I decided to plan this in conjunction with our planned insect unit. It was a hit, with all the kids! After releasing the lady bugs we all enjoyed a picnic lunch, play time at the park and a walk around the duck pond... in search of babies - we found some. The whole day was fantastic!!!

Outdoor Play

I realized the other day I don't share the more laid back parts of our learning -- unstructured, natural outdoor play! We enjoy a ton of this... in which I tend to put on our personal blog. However, I wanted to include that we enjoy a LOT of outdoor park play, natural play and sport play. As the weather is turning to a more comfortable temperature I will include more of our play over here at this blog. In the mean time, yesterday we enjoyed outdoor play at a favorite local park with friends for a couple of hours - it was a great, messy day!
